What is WeCom, and can I reach you on ordinary WeChat?

If you have seen a square QR code on our contact page where other firms put a portrait, this is what it is: a contact card for WeCom, the business edition of WeChat. This page says what WeCom is, what scanning the code does, and when to use it rather than email or WhatsApp.

What is WeCom (企业微信)?

WeCom (企业微信) is Tencent’s workplace communication app, the business counterpart to WeChat. Companies in China use it the way companies elsewhere use Teams or Slack, with one large difference: it is built to connect outward to WeChat, the app almost everyone in China carries. Tencent’s own description of the product leads with that connection (连接微信): a business on WeCom can add customers’ WeChat accounts and serve them in ordinary chats and group chats.^⁠[1]

What happens when I scan the code?

Your phone opens a contact card and offers to add us. Scanning works from WeCom or from ordinary WeChat, and you need nothing new: if WeChat is already on your phone, that is enough. After you add the card, messages flow between your WeChat and our WeCom like any other chat, and you can see from the card that you are talking to a company account rather than a stranger.

Should I use WeCom, WhatsApp or email?

Whichever you already use. Inside mainland China, WeChat is the channel local networks and habits are built around, which is why we offer the WeCom card at all. From outside China, WhatsApp and email are usually the simpler start, and both are on the contact page. Whatever the channel, the same people answer, in office hours, and anything substantive ends up confirmed by email either way.
